“If you think you’ve reached Quickies, well, I hate to break it to you, buddy, but you’ve got the wrong number. If on the other hand you’re looking for your friendly neighborhood webhead, feel free to leave a message.”

[ Oh please oh please oh please, let his months of patience pay off -- ]

Kanaya brought it to my attention that I may have been rash to freeze you out.

But Kanaya's got a good head on her shoulders. I'm glad you called.

She thinks you can help. Can you?

He's silent for a moment, but if anything it gives his next words the weight of absolute conviction.]
Yes. Everything that's in my power to do, I'll do. And more, whatever it takes to protect you.
no subject
I'm not entirely sure what to do.

[Oh Spidey, this is probably far more info that anticipated. ]
I was suspicious, of course. I mean, at thirteen I was suspicious of almost everyone and thought myself terribly clever and a master of subtly and deception. If I had acquainted myself with him I wanted to find out why, so I made myself available for errands and stayed late to work. I ported out at some point and ported back fifteen years old and only about two weeks had passed in the city.
[She pauses, for a long moment. ] Things in my own world are, to be perfectly blunt, fairly terrible. They were not great when I was thirteen and when I came back they had gotten decidedly worse. I had gotten decidedly worse. My personal life is probably of little value to you, but I was vulnerable and miserable and Norman offered me the chance to help people while dissecting the mindset behind being a vigilante. I took the chance with both hands. I've always suspected he had an ulterior motive behind it, but he did almost nothing for close to a year? I've seen him, in the costume a few times, but that's it. Whatever his motivations are, whatever long game he has, I haven't been able to figure it out. If I'm a scapegoat or a distraction, I haven't been able to fathom what for. You might have a better idea, if you know him and his past.
[It feels good to admit that. ]
He - I started receiving injections, back in the city. They gave me a faster healing speed, faster reflexes and more strength. I'm behind, on them now which is why I have the strength of a teenage girl on a terrible diet of McDonalds and tea. I lost track of what I was doing, if I'm being honest with you. I tried very hard to keep Kanaya out of it, but especially so after you told me about Gwen Stacy. The only person who knew close to when this started was my older brother and then he ported out, shortly after.
So, as it happens I'm not as clever as I thought I was two years ago. In fact, I'd say I have been incredibly arrogant and stupid and now there is another Goblin and I am terrified Kanaya might get involved beyond simply knowing about it. I am also very tired, Spider-Man, of being careful.

Peter makes an effort not to interrupt and ask questions, to let her get out the story at her own pace. He's not surprised to hear about the injections. Drug enhancement is part of every Goblin's M.O., willing- or unwillingly. Part of him is even relieved: at least hers shows the signs of wearing off.
The rest of him thrums with outrage; he wouldn't be shocked if Rose could hear him vibrating over the phone. She's only a kid, you bastard!
No more so than Peter had been, the first time he'd found himself at Norman's mercy. Certainly older than Harry. It's not the Halloween suit that made the man a monster. ]
Rose, I'm going to say one thing to you now that you absolutely can't forget, and it's this: you can't beat yourself up for getting played by Norman Osborn. He's a master at yanking people's strings, and he's been doing it for longer than you've been alive -- than either of us have been alive, probably. He had Joe Q. Public and the President of the United States of America convinced he was an upstanding citizen while he was as good as running torture factories, and that's in a universe where people knew as a matter of public record that he'd been a supervillain. Don't get yourself down for getting taken in.
[ He sighs. ] Look, call me paranoid, but I'm not sure we should trust the rest of this conversation to network privacy. Is there somewhere convenient to you that we can meet?

Today isn't great. There aren't a lot of places where you can show up in costume without turning a few heads either. So --
There's my home, in Heropa. I have a few days off from college, Kanaya works nights and our other housemates likely won't notice if you sneak in through a window.

[and with that, she's off to nervously pace around and get back to investigating terrorists. ]
